Our Guild’s History
The Twisted Stitchers Quilt Guild began in 2005 in Ajax with only 25 enthusiastic members who all shared the same love of quilting. Marcie Lane (president) and Nadine MacDonald (secretary) took it upon themselves to start up a guild in our own town. Shahena Fredricks as treasurer and Sharon Galna as vice-president rounded out the first executive committee.
Together, Marcie and Nadine decided that they wanted both a charity and teaching component as the focus for the guild. Nadine's daughter had been in and out of Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto for years so she saw what the children went through while there. Many of our first charity quilts were for the children staying at that hospital. Marcie has since passed away, but the guild is still thriving thanks to her original vision. The more recent executives have added their own flavour to our wonderful guild with great speakers, demos, charity, Ketchup Days and Staycation.
The quilt to the right is one that was made by the Twisted Stitchers for the Town of Ajax to celebrate our very first quilt show in 2008. It depicts the many industries, natural areas and cultural components that make up the town of Ajax. Guild member Maggie Hannigan designed the quilt and other members of the guild contributed different sections. It is located in a hallway in the Town of Ajax's municipal building for the public to enjoy.
The guild has expanded over the years with many extremely talented members who are not only committed to sharing their skills and knowledge with each other, but are equally committed to using their talents to produce quilts and other items for local charities.
At Twisted Stitchers Quilt Guild meetings we enjoy guest speakers, mini workshops, challenges, a show-and-tell of members’ work, and pot-luck dinners. The most important aspect about the guild, other than sharing our love of quilting, is the friendships we develop and the laughs we have at meetings.
The Twisted Stitchers Guild welcomes all quilters, regardless of skill level, and anyone else who wants to learn more about the art of quilting while supporting the community.
